The Crucible Critical Evaluation of Literature “The Crucible” by Arthur Miller is a play set in one of the strangest and most awful chapters in human history, which explores the themes of intolerance of abusive authority figures and individual free-thinking figures with personal integrity. Miller has a lot to say on this, believing that everyone has a social responsibility. By examining the characters’ interactions and speech, I am going to explore what Miller’s message is with regard to what abuse of authority can do and how retaining integrity can defeat all evil. Throughout Act 1, Miller shows the influence of corrupt authority on private citizens and their lives. He does this by contrasting the mood of the play, not only throughout each act, but from beginning to end of the play. The acts tend to begin in a calm and private setting: “The room gives off an air of clean spareness. The roof rafters are exposed, and the wood colours are raw and unmellowed.” However, the atmosphere soon develops becoming crowded, brimming with high emotion and high tension, building ......
