The 1950s seem to have been a battlefield between traditionalists and nonconformists, as revealed in the movie, Mona Lisa Smile, directed by Mike Newell, which depicts a negative view of the decade. Dealing with the main theme of this movie, the traditionalists believed that women had to attend to the roles that they were born to fulfill, such as wife, mother, and homemaker. The nonconformists challenged this idea, feeling that women had a right to break that stereotype and choose to live their life the way they so desired. The 1950s were an important beginning to the gradual, social transition that continues to this day, and the movie presents some valid criticisms of the decade. Since then, women have been able to realize that they can enhance their intellect through continuing their education, and earn a place in the workforce, all the while getting married and raising a family. They dont have to choose one over the other anymore.
