Tsarism challenged: Why was there a Russian Revolution in February 1917? Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The first upheaval on a national scale in Russia had taken place in 1905, whether or not it is defined as a revolution it was the first example of a spontaneous uprising by the inhabitants of Russia and serious threat to the Tsar. Yet at the time, despite widespread dissent the Tsar and his supporters managed to keep a reign on the situation and despite some placatory concessions came out of the encounter reasonable unscathed. So what was it that only 12 years later caused the end of a system of rule that had existed in Russia for over 3 centuries? All the old frictions such as social inequalities or the inflexibility of the tsarist autocracy were the same as in 1905 but it was the introduction of new hardship brought on by the First World War that acted as a catalyst for the revolution of the masses. In this essay I intend to look at the major effects of WW1, how it created new problems within the already unstable society and enhanced those that still existed from 1905. World war one had a sweeping effect over Russian society and rather than uniting the country through patriotis......
