This poem was written by Wilfred Owen, war poet and pacifist who was one of the many that registered their protest to the nature of the First World War through the medium of poetry. One of the most famous pieces eh wrote is “Dulce et Decorum est Pro Patra Mori”, at the time a popular epitaph for soldiers’ graves. It is in Latin and roughly translated means “It is good and noble to die for your country”. This sums up much of the public-school ethos pre WW1, where war was considered both a duty and an honour and the full implications were not comprehended by perhaps anyone. The last war on a serious scale to have been fought by the British was the Boer war over a hundred years previously and despite the obvious fact that both weaponry and tactical warfare would have improved since, people still chose to be naively optimistic about the nature of fighting in the trenches. Where does Dulce et Decorum fit into this? It was one of the many poems Wilfred Owen wrote to try and tackle societies delusions about war and it struck many people with it succinct verse and poignant message. W......
