The novel is set in 1850s London, its Christmas time, cold and miserable. Everyone celebrates Christmas around Scrooge which he ignores. We are first introduced to Scrooge as he sits in his office working for the firm Scrooge and Marley- Marley is dead. Dickens informs us fairly quickly to what a nasty character Scrooge is, he does this by saying that Scrooge is a tight-fisted hand at the grindstone. Scrooge! A squeezing, wrenching, grasping, scraping, clutching, covetous, old sinner. "External heat and cold had little influence on Scrooge. No warmth could warm, no wintry weather chill him. No wind that blew was bitterer than he, no falling snow was more intent upon its purpose . . ." With such words said about him, Scrooge plainly needs to be taught the lesson that he's human after all.
It is from this character that Scrooge changes. It is through the visits from Marley and the three spirits that Scrooge learns about himself and begins to change.
