Landsers, in general, dealt with the fear of battle by developing deep comradeship within each unit. This comradeship was developed to the greatest extent by those who faced the harshest of living conditions, the Landsers of the Eastern Front.
Landsers often felt the need to develop immediate close relationships with those with whom he was sharing his most trying times with. This way he was able to mitigate the feelings of loneliness often felt by men in desperate situations. It was important to him to be able to count on his comrades for emotional strength and to be able to count on them for his physical security in battle, to rely on them to watch his back if things became dangerous.
An account of one Landser, tells of him lying sick in his foxhole, ill and extremely scared. This particular Landser, in an attempt to end his suffering by his own demise, scrambles out of his foxhole only to be dragged back in by his fellow Landser.
