Utilitarianism is the moral theory that decisions should be made in order to produce the most happiness, or the least amount of unhappiness. This theory has three main components: First, only the consequences of actions are to be judged. Second, the consequences are to be assessed by the amount of happiness or unhappiness created. Third, everyones happiness counts the same. This theory seems simple enough; of course it seems correct to promote happiness and oppose unhappiness, but it can get very complicated in moral issues.
Consider the movie Saving Private Ryan where a unit of eight men is sent to retrieve one insignificant private, because his three brothers have been killed. In the process of saving the private, the men capture a German soldier and find themselves in a dilemma: if they let the soldier go, he will rejoin the German troops, but if they execute him they will be violating the Geneva Convention.
