Strictly Ballroom is a fairytale in disguise and the main archetypes are presented. The opening scene features a red curtain and the main title appears slowly and sparkly – using the Disney recipe. Scott Hastings, a ballroom champion, plays the hero who has to overcome certain obstacles. “Just Fran” is the Cinderella / Ugly Duckling who is transformed from a beginner into a confident dancer. The villain is federation president, Barry Fife. Predictably, he is brought to a fall in the end. Scott and Fran, as round characters, develop. Barry is a flat character and remains the way he is. This essay will focus on the archetypes in the film, seeing that the biggest stereotype is found in the exaggerated, artificial way that the ballroom dance community is portrayed. Scott has to tackle external factors. He is frustrated when no one wants to comment on his new steps. His controlling mother is constantly organizing try-outs to find him a new partner since his previous partner Liz left him. When his trainer, Les, tells him to dance with Tina Sparkle, he needs to handle the consequenc......
