Salem Witch Trials Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

What caused the Salem witch trials of 1692? This question has been asked for more than three hundred years. Although this is a simple question, it does not have an easy answer. The answer is difficult because there are multiple factors and events that helped create and influence the trials. The main factors that led to the trials were: politics, economics, family feuds, religion, and the imaginations and fears of the people of Salem Village. Most people in Massachusetts during the colonial period were Puritans- colonists who had left England seeking religious tolerance. But the strict Puritan code was far from tolerant. The Puritan lifestyle was restrained and rigid. People were expected to work hard and repress their emotions or opinions. Individual differences were frowned upon. Puritans believed in witches and their ability to harm others. Thus, witchcraft was considered a sin because it denied GodÂ’s superiority and a crime because the witch could call upon the devil in her shape to perform evil acts against others.
