The Curious Incident of the dog in the night-time (The Curious Incident…) redefines society’s understanding of a proper novel to be “all prose/ a story that readers can follow and learn from in a conventional narrative form.” The novel allows readers to develop a new sense of understanding by inviting them to “tease-out” what is being communicated and the different levels of meaning behind it. By including unconventional forms of language and expression into the novel, the reader finds themselves sharing Christopher’s life, and disregarding their first impressions. Mark Haddon is challenging the reader’s perception of what a conventional novelist does through a young boy who is challenging those around him. Haddon demonstrates the way in which his protagonist, Christopher, perceives the world by the use of different fonts, pictures, diagrams, mathematical equations and long run-on sentences.
