Scarlet Letter - Perceptions of Prynne Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Nathaniel Hawthorne is very big on characterization in many of his novels, including The Scarlet Letter. He develops his characters in a way to help the reader understand each character on a personal level. Hawthorne’s ability to develop his characters well is seen in how the reader’s perception of Hester Prynne changes from the beginning to the end of the novel. Hester is portrayed in many ways throughout the novel, the first being “this sinner” (Hawthorne 56). The “fantastic letter A” on her chest is a constant reminder, as it is pointed out on many occasions, that the reader is to remember Hester’s sin and hold it against her forever (Hawthorne 53). She wears this letter A as a consequence of her sin, adultery. She also has to stand on the town scaffold; she is publicly humiliated because of the “scarlet letter [that is] so fantastically embroidered…upon her bosom” (Hawthorne 53).
