Social Change in the 1920's After the horrors of the Great War, President Harding believed that our Nation needed a return to normalcy. However, the 1920's turned out to be a decade that was anything but normal. The men who had risked their lives “for an older generation’s ideas and mistakes” (Rosenberg 1) and the women who had worked hard in factories during the war were not about to return to the strict social rules of the Victorian age. The war was over and an infectious sense of celebration swept across the country. The 1920's was a decade of change that shaped the United States as we know it today. It was the era that is defined by gangsters, flappers, bootlegging, civil rights, and jazz music. After this revolution the attitudes of the American people would never be the same. The morals and manners of young women in the 1920's were completely opposite from those of their Victorian mothers.
