SENSE AND SENSIBILITY
Sense and Sensibility is an extraordinary story of love, deception and most of all social status. Its a novel set in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, where there certainly was no room for individualist approach to life from a womans perspective. Where feelings, emotions and love were barely spoken of and were looked down upon, the main importance was that you married well into lifes riches and social positions.
There is various ways of depicting the constraints imposed upon and opportunities granted to women in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. This was an age where women did not hold jobs, nor were they allowed to work. They were to depend solemnly on marrying a rich husband to maintain or acquire financial stability, if not they would have to rely on the pity or generosity of their wealthy male relatives. This is a constant theme we come across in this novel.
