There Eyes Where Watching God: Janie’s Self-Awareness Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

In Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston, the main character, Janie Crawford develops her self-awareness of mind. Janie’s life is told in a fashion that ends with Janie finding out who she really is: a strong, confident, black woman overcoming obstacles of race, sexism, and love in the 1930s south. Janie achieves freedom from her second husband, Joe Sparks; she realizes that she is getting old, and finally the realization of what love is. Janie’s self-consciousness helps her stand up to her in getting her freedom from Joe Sparks’ dominative character. After Joe's death, Janie thoughts about Joe’s death, “’To my thinkin' mourning oughtn't tuh last no longer'n grief’"(Hurston 93). This quote means that Janie is not going to mourn Joe’s death for a long time like other women. Janie is also say that she is not upset that Joe is dead. At Joe’s death Janie is set free from his overriding nature. On example of her freedom after Joe’s death is she sets her hair free from the head rags. Even though Joe dies Janie gains strength and is still managing her personal life......
