Fallen Angels by Walter Dean Meyers is a compelling novel about the Vietnam War. This book describes the extreme situations that volunteer soldiers faced every day in Vietnam. The author discusses one group of soldiers whose names are Perry, Brunner, Pee-Wee, Johnson, Lobel, and Monaco. The general scenario is Vietnam in small base camps and on the front lines of the war. As we follow the group of soldiers through the novel we attain a real knowledge of the bloody battlefield that was the Vietnam War.
The sixties and seventies were a time of free love, peace, civil rights and all other acts of disobedience which lead to people rebelling against the Vietnam War. This novel has a plot that is focused more on the war than the at home incidents. The time period affects the plot because the men know that unless they get the job done there may not be anyone else to come over and fight.
