Gender Socialization of Children's Toys We are born female or male but we are not born a boy or a girl. Seeing that gender doesn’t mean the biological sex. Gender refers to the social construct placed upon the individual. So this brings one to question how children get there ideas on what is considered feminine or masculine toys. Is the gender of a toy learned through their parents? Or, is it just socially learned, through observation of other children, and/or older siblings? There have been many studies on this subject. I have found that throughout these studies people have not come to an agreement wether parents or the environment is becoming a stronger influence. In Langolis and Downs (1980), studies they have shown that parents play with their child’s gender-same toys longer, react more positively to gender-same toys, and are more critical of cross-sexed toys. Boys seem to be more attracted to vehicles and weapons. As girls are more likely to ask for a doll or a musical instrument. Strangely enough Etaugh and Liss (1992) found that girls will prefer a masculin......
