Causes of the Salem Witch Trials Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Early in 1692, a terrible scare swept through Salem, Massachusetts. Salem, which was established by the Puritans, was a natural result of the Reformation of England. The trouble in Salem began during the cold dark Massachusetts winter, January 1692. Eight young girls began to take ill, beginning with 9-year-old Elizabeth Parris, the daughter of Reverend Samuel Parris, as well as his niece, 11-year-old Abigail Williams. But theirs was a strange sickness, the girls suffered from delirium, violent convulsions, incomprehensible speech, trance-like states, and odd skin sensations. The worried villagers searched desperately for an explanation. Their conclusion, the girls were under a spell, bewitched and, worse yet, by members of their own pious community. As time went on, the girls began to accuse more and more people. By late spring, more than one hundred people had been named as witches. The adults of the town were surprised by the accusations, but took them very seriously. Almost all of the people who had been accused of witchcraft were charged and put on trial. These trials......
