Thanatopsis Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The lyric poem, “Thanatopsis”, written by William Cullen Bryant, a Romantic poet greatly influenced by deist beliefs and theories, implements a view of death much different from the norm and usual. The argument is presented that Nature provides solace from the fear of death and that in the end, everyone becomes one in Nature. The reader and audience is to become less frightened of the thought of death and is to come to view it as a transition in the continuous cycle of birth, life, death, and rebirth, which was the central belief of Deism. The poem, itself, is a prime example of a Romantic writing. There are two speakers present in “Thanatopsis”; the author and Nature. The author explains that once someone passes, they are now a part of nature and their soul will no longer be seen in human form When Nature speaks, she centralizes on giving a description on man’s grave, Earth. “Thou shalt lie down/ With patriarchs of the infant world – with kings, / The powerful of the earth – the wise, the good, / Fair forms, and hoary seers of ages past, / All in one might sepulcher.” T......
