“The great dragon, the primeval serpent, known as the devil or Satan, who had deceived all the world, was hurled down to the earth and his angels were hurled down with him.’ To many of us when we hear the name ‘Satan’ or the ‘Devil’ we automatically conjure up in our minds a visual representation of an evil beast-like creature that to us symbolises the pure evil, not only pure evil to us but pure evil to the world. The cause of everything that goes wrong in the world, the universal scapegoat we blame for all of societies problems. In my response I will be looking at two different representations of the devil. I have decided to look at the subject area of Tarot cards and have chosen two images. The first image has been taken from an early tarot card deck the second has been taken from an artist’s interpretation of the traditional tarot deck. When talking to people about the tarot and other mystical forces such as divination the first image of the tarot most people will conjure up is that of the card of the devil.
