Discuss/compare/contrast the roles of nature within Elizabethan verse and Ballads. Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Throughout ballads the theme of nature and its elements are present. This theme is especially noticeable within the ballad “The Three Ravens.” It uses this theme to look at the relationship between man and nature and it portrays this in quite a positive way. The three ravens are discussing a newly slain Knight and it is told that he is in “yonder greene field.” This suggests an idyllic, calm and peaceful setting. It seems almost as if nature is protecting the Knight as he is “slain under his shield”, covering him and providing him with a grave. This allows him some dignity and respect in his death which is what a noble and honourable Knight deserves. The animals that are in this ballad are portrayed as loyal and work to protect the dead Knight. His dogs protect him “so well they can their master keep.” His hawks act in a similar way, they “fly so early” and “there’s no fowl dare him come nigh.” These both create an image of them being strong and powerful and also loyal and chivalrous; characteristics usually associated with a person and especially a Knight.
