The Fountainhead Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

In the book The Fountainhead, Howard Roark is wedged in a corrupt society that attempts to strip him of all his principles. Roark is tempted many times by the easy way out, but he always stays true to himself and does things his way. On the contrary, people like Gail Wynand strive for power and success by producing what society wants to see. The theme of this novel is the power of individuality. Societies have built the past, but individuals who are willing to be true to themselves, propel a greater civilization. Even from the very beginning of the novel we see that Roark is a very self sufficient person that has similar qualities of a rock. He uses theses qualities to repel the attacks of the people that want break his shell and turn him into a regular member of society. His real power is not obvious to society, but threatens the core of what people like Ellsworth Toohey are trying to do. Wynand is a very powerful man in the eyes of society, but inside himself he knows that there is something missing.
