Im proud to be an American... is the opening statement in a popular country music song that has ridden the radio airwaves lately. However, as in any society, Americans have moments in history that do not make anyone proud. Case in point, the atrocities committed by American soldiers during the Vietnam War. These soldiers, under the guise of war killed hundreds of innocent civilians in Vietnam, and tortured Vietnamese prisoners, according to the reports in the Los Angeles Times. As recently as August 2006, reporters wrote about alleged and substantiated incidents of murder, rape, unethical torture of prisoners and dereliction of duty. Their information came directly from previously unreleased Pentagon records.
Why the recent interest in the deaths of Vietnamese civilians and the torture of prisoners that happened more than 38 years ago?
