The Past is always with us. As we go through life, different experiences can have big impacts. However, once these experiences are over they are not forgotten, and can change the way we see and feel about our lives in the future. Isobelle Carmody shows this in The Gathering through the characters Nathanial and Nissa. There is something about Nathanial’s past that is not right, and always seems to be haunting him. He has to face the truth about his past before he can overcome the darkness. Nissa’s past has affected the way she feels about love and herself. Right from the start of the novel, Isobelle Carmody makes it clear that there is something about Nathanial’s father that is a mystery, and somehow this affects Nathanial in a way that is not clear to himself at first. At the start of the novel Nathanial thinks about his mother and father: ?I guess she must have hated him for leaving her. Maybe she wished he were dead. Sometimes wishes come true.? (pg 4) Nathanial cannot remember the truth about his father and what happened to him as a baby. He has unintentionally blocked it......
