Akram Khan and Shobana Jeyasingh both come from an Indian background but are both based in the UK. Both Khan and Jeyasingh started out as soloists and had early training in Indian dance; Khan in Formal Kathak dance and Jeyasingh in Formal Bharata Natyam dance. Khan also trained in Contemporary, Jeyasingh however did not. Both choreographers use a combination of Indian and Contemporary dance styles to produce a new style which incorporates a fusion of cultures. Working with abstract dance the themes of the works usually focus on exploring movement possibilities of the body and ways of structuring that movement into choreography. Khan explores ideas from once piece to the next, one piece influencing another in an on-going choreographic process. For example, after choreographing his work Fix (1995) Khan came up with the idea for Rush (2000). The stimulus for Rush was paragliding and free fall, an idea that grew out of an interest in the contrast between speed and stillness that he had experimented with in Fix and now wanted to explore further.
