The advent of relatively cheap, robust personal computers (laptops), over the past decade, have resulted in an increasing number of Australian Independent Schools prescribing laptop computers as one of the standard items of equipment students must bring with them to the science classroom. However, to date, there has been a minimal amount of reported research on the impact laptop computers have had on student attitude to science and on student cognitive achievement in science, and there are no published reports on the impact laptop computers have had on students' perceptions of science classroom environment.
