Investigate the artistic practice of two artists and discuss how chance or/and selection were important considerations in their work. -Marcel Duchamp and Hans Arp Hans Arp was a well known sculptor, painter and poet. He is especially well known as being the co-founder of the Zurich Dada movement in 1916. Arp once said that “Dadaism has reduced positive and negative to utter nonsense. It has been destructive to achieve indifference.” Arp believed that creating art by absolute chance was the real way to create art. Arp and other Dadaists turned to chance as an antidote. He once made ‘Collage with squares according to the laws of chance.’ This is a perfect example of one of his ‘chance collages.’ He tore paper into pieces and then dropped them onto a larger sheet of paper on the floor. He then proceeded to paste each scrap down where it landed and called it art. This interestingly composed collage of torn and pasted paper is often viewed as playful and almost like a syncopated composition in which the pieces of squares seem to freely flow within the space.
