edgar allen poe Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The Pit and the Pendulum and the Tale-Tell heart are both horror stories by the famous Edgar Allen Poe. His strange and effective style of writing is used for both of these short stories but he uses his skill in different ways in each. I will be looking at the way in which he creates tension in these two stories and I will also be focusing on one character from each story. I am going to start with the Pit and the Pendulum. The man who is accused is obviously being persecuted for a crime we do not know and the prisoner does not question his guilt or innocence. The man, who is not named finds himself in a pit like dungeon. Poe uses common phobias to create tension in the cell. The main one of these is darkness. Imagine waking up in a cell when you have just been condemned to death to find you cannot see you own hands inches away from your face. Darkness would normally raise anxiety but it would be terrifying in these circumstances. The prisoner wakes only to realize that he is strapped onto a board and bound by a "surcingle".
