"An Unseen Reflection" Paul Ratliff Gothic literature exists as a style of fiction that emphasizes the grotesque, mysterious, and desolate. Dracula, a gothic English novel written in 1897 by Bram Stoker, illustrates a Satanic character through the Count. The Count exists as the protagonist of this novel because he experiences the most change. The antagonists consist of the beloved ones affected by Dracula who oppose his behavior. In the novel, out of the three themes of Gothic literature, mysterious prevails because of the uncertainty of the Count's life. God plays a major part in this book because His plan for the characters leads them to joy and pain. The book centers on a stereotyped character, portrayed as evil and even looked upon as the Anti-Christ. The major conflict of this novel resided in overcoming the evil and pain He creates through his controlled victims. Grotesquery exists as a major part of this novel because it expresses gruesomeness and horror that Count Dracula possibly went through after his original death and the pain he caused his victims.
