The Musical Synthesizer Or Sampler
As a musician I have been asked many times to explain the difference in a Musical Synthesizer and a Sampler, both a synthesizer and sampler are sound generating sources, the difference between the two is in how the devices make their noises, to a person that is new to the trade its all one in the same. But; to a musician it is the difference between night and day.
A synthesizer uses oscillators to make sounds. An oscillator is an electronic circuit which creates a frequency. In a synthesizer, these oscillators may create frequencies which the human ear can detect (i.e., 20-20000hz). These oscillators may be adjusted by a musician to output any frequency within human hearing. In other words, the oscillator can play any pitch. One control that a human might use to adjust the oscillator is the musical keyboard (i.e., piano keyboard).
