Stem cells could be the greatest advancement in medical history to date, giving us the ability to cure diseases and conditions once thought to be incurable. Stem cells have the potential to transform into other types of cells in the body. Serving as a sort of repair system for the body, they can theoretically divide without limit to replenish other cells as long as the person is living. During mitosis, each new cell has the potential to either remain a stem cell or become another type of specialized cell, such as a muscle cell, a red blood cell, or even nerve cells. Stem cells are cells that are found in a human embryo and blood that are associated with the embryo, (umbilical cord blood). These cells are not yet differentiated and can take on any cell that they are exposed to or encouraged to become through genetic engineering. Since these cells can become what we make them, this could allow for greater breakthroughs in medicine, possibly bringing about treatments for conditions that we once thought to be incurable.
