Dreams in the story Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

In the story Gilgamesh, several dreams are told to help introduce important ideas and foreshadow future events. The first dream foreshadows the union of Gilgamesh and his comrade Enkidu, thereby establishing the theme of the story by illustrating their eternal friendship. Enkidu and Gilgamesh continued to have dreams that had different meanings throughout the story. The occurrence of other dreams continues to foretell events and develop the story. The first dream by Gilgamesh foreshadows the encounter with Enkidu. He appears as a meteor which Gilgamesh describes as he says, "I tried to lift it but it proved too heavy" (Gilgamesh 15). The devotion between the two comrades is compared to that "like the love of a woman" (15-16). Likewise, Gilgamesh's second dream foretells the bond that will take place between him and Enkidu. He is drawn to an unusual looking axe explaining, "I loved it like a woman and wore it at my side" (16). Ninsun, Gilgamesh's mother, interprets both dreams and confirms the good that will come when brave Enkidu and Gilgamesh unite. It appears that G......
