Masks in the Rover Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Masks are a means of disguise; they hide one’s identity as well as conceal their appearance. In Aphra Behn’s, The Rover, these aspects of the mask are crucial. They liberate otherwise constrained characters, allow for characters to test one another, and also create confusion—all which drive the play’s actions. Masks do not only allow characters in this play to remain incognito, but to liberate them from the shackles that bind them to a predetermined life—a life of no choices. Helena is a prime example of this concept as she effectively makes use of the mask in order to escape from her destiny of being “bred in a nunnery” (1.1.1). She opts for a life in which she can have a man—“a saint of [her] own”—, namely Willmore (1.1.127). She first meets Willmore dressed as a gypsy, then in an antick dress and lastly as a boy. Through these encounters, her mask allows her to be unrecognizable to her brother at the carnival, which she was originally not going to attend due to the constraint of her brother’s demand that she be “lock[ed]…up all this carnival” (1.1.120).
