Justice and Civil Disobedience in Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The “Letter from Birmingham Jail” is Martin Luther King, Jr.’s great rebuttal to a public statement made by white clergymen denouncing his methods of nonviolent protest as “unwise and untimely.” In the letter, he addressed the main concerns of the clergymen, most importantly the argument that demonstrations in the streets should be discontinued in favor of negotiation in the courts. King affirmed that his purpose was indeed to bring the issues of the black people to the courts, but that without direct action, this would never be realized. The cries of the Negro would be ignored as they had been for more than 340 years unless they are shouted directly into the white man’s ear. A call for justice, the letter would later become a manifesto for the civil rights campaign because of its effective portrayal of the ideas and rationale behind the movement. In the letter to which King replied, the white clergymen decried the fact that the demonstrations were led in part by “outsiders,” a direct reference to King. King therefore opened his letter ......
