Fashion of 1874
Chemise, tournure, petticoat, corset, bodice, cuirass bodice, and garniture are just some of the few names used to describe clothing in the late nineteenth century. A chemise is just a fancy word for an undershirt made out of cotton or linen. A corset was used to shape the body into more socially accepting curves. A tournure was a skirt used to overemphasize the rear part of a lady. The supporting area of the skirt were made out of steel or whalebones and were normally stuffed with cloth or horsehair. Petticoats were used very much in this era and they consisted of a heap of ruffles to make the dress fuller and wider. A bodice was worn from the waist to the shoulder and were normally made of lace. Finally, a garniture were the decorative pieces of lace and ribbon used to accentuate the boring colors and style of the dresses in the nineteenth century.
