The Heart of Darkness: The Madness Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad is a tale of madness, the madness found in one man and the madness found in society. Kurtz’s madness draws attention to all the madness that goes on during this expedition in the attempt to civilize the uncivilized. The question posed by the end of the work is, what is the definition of madness? Madness is a reoccurring theme found in this Novella, but it is a subtle kind of madness. Kurtz for example is the epitome of society and is there to carry out the will of the European ideology, “He is an emissary of pity, and science, and progress” (27). People look up to Kurtz as he is the most successful agent within the company, “he was a first-class agent….Sends in as much ivory as all the others put together” (22). Kurtz is slipping into the grips of the Wilderness. Marlow is sensing this as he speaks to himself, “It was a distinct glimpse: the dugout, four paddling savages and the lone white man turning his back suddenly on the headquarters, on relief, on thoughts of home—perhaps; setting his face towards the depths of the wilderne......
