Southern Classic Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

As most of us are use to eating cornbread made by Jiffy mix, which was created in 1930. Today I’m going to speak on homemade cornbread in the South. Cornbread was first discovered during the European exploration of North America. Before the Europeans arrived, the Native Americans used ground corn for cooking. Cornbread was popular during the American Civil War because it was cheap and could be made in different forms. Cornbread is a popular item in soul food. Cornbread can be baked, fried, or rarely steamed. I will now inform you on five types of cornbread. The first one is called skillet-baked cornbread; it’s a cuisine in the United States, especially in Southern United States. Skillet-baked cornbread is done on the stove with the mixtures of cornmeal, buttermilk, and eggs. When it’s finished it looks like a crumbly cake. The second type of cornbread is called Corn pone. Corn pone is a type of cornbread, made of a thick, dough made of cornmeal or hominy grits, shaped by hand and then baked or fried in butter, margarine, lard or bacon grease.
