Marriage in the Canterbury Tales Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
In The Canterbury Tales, Geoffrey Chaucer represents marriage as an undesirable course of action in numerous ways. Most of his stories regarding marriage host harsh lessons concerning the woes and misfortunes of married life. Chaucer also cleverly uses the voices of his characters, specifically the women, in order to maintain his point that marriage if often times not the sacrament it is assumed to be.
The Merchants Tale, the Reeves Tale, and the Millers Tale are fine examples of marriages destroyed by a wife who cheats on her husband. Though the situations in which the disloyalties occurred are different, the wife in each tale is glorified as the culprit of marriage [that] is a misery and a woe (258). Chaucer gives ample reasoning as to why the women take the course of action that they do (the cheating), but they are still perceived to be full of cunning tricks and subtleties (388). The reader is able to sympathize with the wifes situation and it is not necessarily made clear that she shouldve stayed the course with her husband. This conclusion can be made ......
