Robert Morris and the first Internet Worm Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Robert Morris first encountered a computer at his home. Morris’ father, the chief scientist of the Computer Security branch of the National Security Agency, once brought home one of the original Enigma cryptographic machines from the NSA. As a teenager Morris had an account on the Bell Labs’ computer network where early hacking forays gave him super user status. In theory “worms” and “viruses” cannot exist. Computer systems are designed in such a way that external programs can’t be “injected” into them. Obviously this is not true or there would be no need for virus software or any fear of identity theft amongst computer users. Morris, a graduate of Cornell University, wrote the first Internet Worm almost by accident at the age if 22. Robert thought he had found a flaw in the way that email software worked. Rtm, Robert Morris’ Hacker nickname, then wrote 99 lines of code to exploit this flaw and released them onto the Internet as an experiment.
