In the book The Scarlet Letter, written by Nathaniel Hawthorne there are several characters that will catch your attention as you keep you reading. Out of all the main characters the one that stood out to me the most, was Hester Prynne. Hester was a strong woman for her time. Some thinkers believe that the individual is a rational creature, who can live life independent of his societys impact, while others would argue that humans are mere pawns who are under the constant impact of societal forces that appear incomprehensible to them (Shevelenko p1). I believe Hester was impacted greatly by her society. I also believe that Hester wanted to change her society into a more modern thinking place to live. Back in Hesters time men dominated everything. Women are very powerful figures, one powerful quote is if men have control of women, the have control of their powers (Kittay p150), this is why women were so suppressed in that time, men feared the powers and strong will of a women like Hester Prynne.
