The Tobacco Deal Tobacco companies had won every lawsuit brought against them and never paid out a dime for over forty years. In 1997 that all changed, the tobacco industry agreed to a historic deal to pay $368 billion in health-related damages, tear down billboards and retire Joe Camel and the Marlboro man. So, what is the Tobacco Deal and how did the deal emerge? We will discuss who started the war, the damaging internal documents, who was affected, the settlement, and present times from the effects of the Tobacco Deal. What is the tobacco deal? The tobacco deal started when two small town Mississippi lawyers who were once classmates at Ole Mississippi declared war on the tobacco industry. The reason for the lawsuit was to recover the costs of health care for citizens with smoking related illnesses and Medicaid costs paid by various states. Mike Lewis, a Mississippi attorney was convinced by Michael Moore, an attorney general in the state of Mississippi into pursuing a lawsuit against the tobacco industry.
