Large parts of the continent have effectively no health care at all, with only 600,000 health care workers for a population of 682 million. In Uganda, for instance, the numbers of doctors dropped from 978 to 574 in early 1970s thus increasing the doctor-to-patient ratio significantly from 1:9200 to 1:27,660. All state run services were seriously understaffed, particularly the rural health centres and dispensaries, which serve over 80% of the population. Currently there are just five nurses to every 100,000 patients. But this is not unique to Uganda. In Ethiopia, there are 2.8 physicians for 100,000 people. This figure is only marginally better in neighbouring countries but is still alarming: 4 in Somalia and 13.2 in Kenya. The nurses to patient ratios are equally poor. In 2001 alone, Ghana lost 2,972 nurses. The vacancy rate for nurses was a whopping 57% in 2002 compared with 25% in 1998. Their destination is principally the west an......
