Symbolism adds life and meaning to works of literature. J.D. Salinger uses numerous symbols in his novel The Catcher in the Rye. The street, the ducks, and the hunting hat are three important symbols that show how scared Holden Caulfield truly is of growing up.
Growing up is similar to crossing a street and moving from childhood to adulthood.
