No Need to Be Scared Symbolism adds life and meaning to works of literature. J.D. Salinger uses numerous symbols in his novel The Catcher in the Rye. The street, the ducks, and the hunting hat are three important symbols that show how scared Holden Caulfield truly is of growing up. Growing up is similar to crossing a street and moving from childhood to adulthood. Holden fears this journey into maturity, “You felt like you were disappearing every time you crossed a road” (Salinger, 6). Holden is a child at heart. He does not want to grow up and turn into the grouchy adults that surround him. Reviewer Paul Engle writes, “The story was emotional without being sentimental, dramatic without being melodramatic, and honest without being simply obscene” (Chicago Tribune, 1).
