Although the China and Japan are both Far East Asian countries, they reacted completely different to the invasion of the west in the mid-19th century. The interest in these countries was strictly based on the capitalist nature of the west, and the resistance from the Far East Asia countries was based on the westernerÂ’s imperialist nature. The east viewed the western European attempts to invade and profit off their land as barbaric and poisoning to their society. The west only saw the enormous trading potential and the exotic goods that could be acquired. At the same time, there was a mutual lack of respect for each otherÂ’s culture, tradition and politics. Although invasion was eventually successful in both China and Japan, and even though they shared tradition and values, they did not respond similarly to the impending crisis that loomed before them. This essay will reflect the response of China as sacrifice, fear and surrender, while Japan is better characterized as clever, conscious and deliberate.
