Sonnets Essay Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

In his sonnets, Shakespeare explores the idea of beauty in a less conventional way to that which was typical of the times. In Elizabethan England, most sonnets were based upon the ideas of the Petrach, who in his sonnets idealises his mistress, praising her beauty and perfection using an extravagant variety of metaphors to emphasise his view. One sonnet where we see this new technique used is in sonnet 130.This sonnet mocks the typical Petrachan metaphors and therefore gives a false impression of the conventional and traditional love sonnet. In one sense we could say that by doing this, Shakespeare is trying to criticise the extravagant claims used by other poets such as Petrach and attempting to provide a simple declaration of reality. We see this from the first quatrain of sonnet 130, in which the poet makes claims which were untypical of sonnets at the time. “My mistress’ eyes are nothing like the sun.” This kind of comparison with the eyes and sun was quite traditional.
