There is no doubt of an existing symbolic relationship between media and the portrayal of Arabs, particularly as seen in news media. Newspapers use key words like extremists, terrorists, and fanatics to describe Arabs, labeling them as enemies of the American people. These distortions of Arab people have created a general mistrust and abhor for Arabs among the general American public. Arab-Americans are increasingly under attack as a result of the US 'war on terror' - at home, as well as abroad. Since the tragic events of September 11th, Arab and Muslim Americans have faced a major assault on their civil liberties. While targeting vulnerable groups and drawing on racist stereotypes about Arabs, these measures threaten millions of people, including immigrants, activists, academics, writers, and anyone who the government wishes to define as a 'threat' to national security.
