Introduction Charles Dickens was born in Portsmouth on the 7th February 1812 – in the Victorian period. After a troubling childhood which included his father being imprisoned in a debtor’s prison, Charles Dickens became determined to become a successful writer. Charles Dickens’ wrote his novels episodically which means he wrote them bit by bit in series which were published in magazines. During his career Dickens wrote many entertaining works which were immensely popular. The popularity of his novels and short stories during his lifetime and to the present is demonstrated by the fact that none has ever gone out of print. Dickens wrote serialized novels, which was then usual format for fiction, and each new part of his stories would be eagerly anticipated by the reading public.
