The female silhouette changed drastically between the years of 1910 and 1920. If responsibility can only lie in one place then it should lie with Gabrielle Chanel. In the twentieth century Chanel went from being a fashion designer to a fashion icon. Never influenced by previous fashion; she introduced entirely new ideas on how to make women look feminine. She created a clean, uncluttered look that served the basis for much of the haute couture design in the following decades.
According to the author Francois Baudot, Chanel was born on August 19, 1883 in Saumur, France, but due to the death of her mother during her childhood Chanels identity papers were lost and her early years remain a mystery (Baudot, 4). Because of their poverty, her father sent her and her two sisters to a convent orphanage in Aubazine, France. She never saw her father again, but she clearly remembered images of him calling her Coco for the very first time, and it is believed that this inspires her future nickname (Baudot, 5).
