Kindred Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The Roots of the Kindred Dana, the main character and narrator of Octavia E. Butler’s novel Kindred, attempts to preserve the present by traveling back to the past. This science fiction novel takes place in 1976, and is a story of how Dana travels back to Maryland during the year 1815. As an African American, Dana is forced to adapt to the life of a slave, while making sure her ancestor, Rufus, stays alive so she can ultimately be born. Dana’s efforts to sustain the present are similar to Captain Marlow’s attempt in The Heart of Darkness written by Joseph Conrad. Both travelers venture back to the past, or more primitive times, and develop altered perceptions of their present life when they return to normality. It was necessary for Dana to travel back to1815 for more than just to preserve her existence in the present. She felt obligated to understand her history, and was eager to explore her roots. While Dana was searching for the roots of her kindred, or her family, she was able to compare the differences between modern society, and society during the early 1800’s. ......
