The election of 1912 was easily one of the most exciting and important elections in American history. During this pivotal point in American history, the four presidential candidates, Theodore Roosevelt of New York, Woodrow Wilson of New Jersey, William Howard Taft of Ohio, and Eugene Victor Debs of Illinois, all fought to instill their respective platforms that each claimed would take the country and the people into an era never seen before. With each candidate came a unique approach to the citizens and government policy. Energetic and outgoing, former president Roosevelt possessed progressive views and his tough “Bull Moose” Party. Eventual winner and former Princeton President Wilson ran as a reform Democrat. Roosevelt’s successor, former close friend, and current president Taft brought a more conservative progressivism to the Republican Party. Finally, everyman Debs ran as the leader of the Socialist Party, promising to fight for the common worker.
