Eugenics - North Carolina, Virginia, and Oklahoma Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The states I chose to focus on for my essay are North Carolina, Virginia, and Oklahoma. Other historical references to the beginning of eugenics and sterilization in the United States come from Indiana. March 9, 1907 was an important day in American history. This is the day that Indiana legislature passed the United States first eugenic sterilization law. This law allowed for “confirmed criminals, idiots, imbeciles, and rapists” to be sterilized. Within ten more years fourteen other states had mandated this same policy. Many different categories of people were forced to undergo sterilization, including the mentally ill, epileptics, those with low IQ score, and many criminals. As many as twenty-three states had laws providing the sterilization of various types of people to eliminate any possible chances of them reproducing. Indiana’s law was ruled unconstitutional in 1921, but replaced by a similar law in 1923. In 1942, Skinner vs. State of Oklahoma ruled all eugenics sterilization law illegal.
